Week 2: Immunity Challenge

Last week on Survivor Hamilton: Fire & Ice… After Hielo dominated the first Immunity Challenge, Jon blew up his own game, leading to a unanimous vote at Fuego, and the hunt for Hidden Immunity Idols began.

Fuego beachOn the walk back from Tribal Council, Fuego had to deal with the rain, had to deal with empty stomachs, had to deal with tired bodies, but luckily for the 11 remaining castaways, didn’t have to deal with Jon. Somehow, the tribe came together with a unanimous vote, meaning that the game would start all over again this week. After a night sleeping in the rain, Graham was fed up with the constant focus on Immunity Idols and pleaded with the rest of the tribe to focus on building a shelter. The didn’t have fire, and they didn’t have food, but at least, with some work, Fuego would at least be out of the rain.

Hielo beachAt Hielo beach, the mood was very different. They had an excellent night, and that’s because everyone was working exceptionally well together. That teamwork netted the creation of two shelters: one that slept eight, and one that slept four, as well as a fire pit, and a pen for the chickens. Now that most of the initial work was done, Hielo spent their time lounging by the beach, snacking on rice & beans, and talking about how they were all such great friends. This paradise would never end, because Hielo would never lose.

platformCome on in guys! It’s time for another Immunity Challenge and this one is very straightforward. In a series of head to head battles, members of each tribe will jump off one platform and into the water, dive down and un-tie a round buoy. Once the buoy is un-tied, you’ll need to swim 30 metres to a second platform. Once there, you’ll climb up and shoot your buoy into one of 11 baskets. First tribe to 6 baskets wins Immunity, while the losing tribe wins a date with me at Tribal Council this week. Hielo, you have one extra member and will need to sit someone out.

Hielo chose to sit Jonathan out, and once everyone was on the starting platform, and both tribes had decided their order, it was time to proceed with the challenge. First up would be Chelsea and Luke.

Here we go, for Immunity, survivors ready? GO!

Chelsea and Luke immediately dove into the water, where they both immediately targeted the closest buoys, and dove down to begin un-tying. Luke needed to come up for air, while Chelsea was able to get the buoy first try, swim over, climb the platform and sink her first shot before Luke was out of the water. Hielo leads 1-0

In the second battle, Alex took on Meg. Both of them made it to the platforms around the same time, but Alex made her first shot, while Meg missed. Hielo leads 2-0

Next up were Cait and Claudia, and again, Hielo completely dominated her portion, leaving Claudia shaking her head because she was doing very well. Hielo leads 3-0

Graham then pointed at Cowin and challenged him to the next battle. After diving in, Graham immediately targeted Cowin, wrestling him to slow him down in the water. As physical contact is illegal in water challenges, Graham was eliminated. Hielo leads 4-0

Things were not looking good for Fuego as Bryan stepped up to face off against Tyler. After some mostly polite trash talk, they both dove in the water to find and un-tie their buoys. They were neck and neck climbing back up their platforms, and both missed (as the remaining baskets were getting farther away) meaning they would have to dive back in and get their buoys, climb back up and shoot again. This time, Bryan landed his shot in a basket before Tyler got his shot off! Hielo leads 4-1

With a 4-1 lead, Silas hoped that he could defeat Peter and bring Hielo within one basket of Immunity victory.  As they jumped in the water, Peter’s long arms clearly pulled him ahead of Silas, and allowed him to retrieve his buoy and get to shooting before Silas could climb up. Unfortunately he missed his shot, while Silas made his, to much applause from his happy family on Hielo. He even yelled something about “Game Theory” but Peter didn’t care. Hielo now leads 5-1, and are one away from Immunity!

Stepping up to keep Fuego alive, Chris looked at Elliott, and told him he had no chance. Elliott tried to think of a comeback, but couldn’t. Turns out he couldn’t shoot either, as Chris took this battle, cutting the lead down to 3. Hielo leads 5-2

shoot

In a very hard-fought battle, Stevie was able to out-cardio Stef, as they each shot multiple times before Stevie connected, and for the first time Fuego was starting to believe that maybe they could defeat their competition. Hielo leads 5-3

In the 9th battle, Iain took on Greg in another duel that would take a long time. As the available baskets were further and further away, and with the choppy water, retrieving a missed shot took so much out of the competitors. After what felt like an eternity, Iain landed his shot in a basket! Hielo leads 5-4, and was now getting very nervous.

Fresh off a humiliating performance last week and with a chance to redeem himself, Jordan made very short work of Paul, jumping into his tribe’s arms as he tied it up 5-5! Fuego and Hielo would now come down to their final castaways.

With only the farthest basket available, the winds and waves knocking the platforms around, and needing to retrieve the deepest buoy, Rebecca and David dove into the water to begin a head to head battle that would determine Immunity for the week.

Fear of the Unknown

David was the first to get his buoy, as Rebecca still struggled to un-tie hers, and he tirelessly climbed onto the platform to attempt to win Immunity for Hielo. Unfortunately, he missed, and missed a second time, before Rebecca was ready to take her shot. But Rebecca missed too! Returning for his 3rd shot, David definitely looked tired now. He continued to miss his next shot, as did Rebecca, and they continued on like this for an entire hour. To their credit, they didn’t quit as the waves, wind, and rain didn’t make hitting the farthest basket any easier, and swimming back and forth any smoother.

For Hielo, a win would make turn challenge into a very close call, and a reminder that all their nighttime spooning couldn’t guarantee victory every week like they had daydreamed. For Fuego, this was a chance to prove that this was a two tribe game, and that Hielo wouldn’t walk all over them just because they massaged eachother in a circle every afternoon.

So as David lined up for his 25th shot, and Rebecca her 20th, the other 21 castaways, though exhausted, cheered them on, hoping for a miracle. And as their shots both headed way out into the water towards the last basket, David tried to talk his buoy into the basket, while Rebecca, exhausted, and a little badass, simply turned towards her waiting tribe as her ball landed directly in the basket and…

FUEGO WINS IMMUNITY and safety from this week’s Tribal Council! Hielo, unfortunately you have a date Friday night with yours truly, where someone will become the 2nd person voted out of Survivor Hamilton: Fire & Ice.

Hielo: Voting concludes Friday night at 10:59PM. I made it one hour earlier so please don’t wait until the last second. Also don’t vote if you aren’t ready because you can’t change it once given to me. Hidden Immunity Idols can be played any time before the deadline, but again, please not last-second or else I can’t post until Saturday.

Happy voting.
