Week 9: Immunity Challenge

Last week on Survivor Hamilton: Fire & Ice… After the tribes swapped two members, Paul was unable to overcome his 3rd poor challenge performance in a row, and his new pals at Fuego promptly voted him out.

Fuego beach

Sure they had all liked Paul well enough, he was swell guy. It’s just that Fuego had already been through so much together that Paul and Chelsea were always going to have a tough time integrating on their new tribe. One key difference between them was that Chelsea was one of the top challenge performers in the game, and for 3 weeks in a row Paul was just off his game. Now he was out of the game, and Fuego was down to 8. And suddenly, not that its important in any way, but 5 of those 8 were women!

Outnumbered 16-8 to start the game, the women always faced an uphill battle, but they were making it look easy with 7 straight men going home. I hope I didn’t jinx it! In reality on Fuego beach no one was really thinking about the ratio though. There was one goal, and one goal only, win Immunity so another hard decision could be avoided.

Hielo beach

Over at Hielo beach, Bryan and Peter were still working to integrate with the tribe. Everyone knew that they had volunteered to leave Fuego, so Hielo was certainly wondering why, so they could help understand their motives. It really had come down to two alliances at Fuego, and once Iain and Chris were voted out, it was clear that Peter and Bryan would at least be viable options to go next.

So they jumped at the opportunity to join Hielo to see how their games could be reborn. It had been bittersweet for the rest of the tribe. A tough night at Tribal had brought their numbers down to 7, but they were immediately brought back up to 9 the morning after, so it would be necessary to make all new plans. With so many previous connections in the game, how would these newcomers shake up Hielo?

Come on in guys! Hielo, getting your first look at the new Fuego, your old tribemate Paul, voted out at Tribal Council. Ready to get to today’s Immunity Challenge?

The tribes will race to assemble a wheelbarrow, then race to a variety of stations in a field to collect coconuts, then dump the coconuts in a bin at the end, then disassemble the wheelbarrow and re-assemble it, Transformers-style, to become a slingshot. Once completed, the tribes will then race to fire coconuts at five large wooden masks. The first tribe to hit all 5 targets will win Immunity, while the losing tribe will head to Tribal Council tomorrow where someone will be the 8th person voted out of the game. Ready to get started? Hielo, you have one extra member – gotta sit someone out.

Silas volunteers to sit this one out.

For Immunity. Survivors ready? GO!

Both tribes immediately started working on their wheelbarrows, which looked to be in about 100 pieces (but was actually only 18). While Luke barked orders at Fuego, Cait, Alex and Stef were standing around Hielo while they worked, the women calmly instructing the rest of the tribe how the wheelbarrow pieces appeared to fit together. Because of this leadership, Hielo was defeinitely making faster progress than their orange neighbors so far. Meg was trying to eye how Hielo was putting theirs together, but Peter immediately stood in her line of vision, blocking his old tribemate’s view.

Graham and Jordan had just started to figure it all out as Hielo was finishing their wheelbarrow, and with Bryan, Elliott and Jonathan pushing, started towards the first pile of blue-striped coconuts, where Tyler immediately began filling his arms. They kept falling out though, and he found himself doing that little kid thing where every time he’d bend over to grab a fallen coconut, 2 more would fall out of his arms. It was hilarious.

As he struggled and Silas chuckled from the sidelines, Fuego started pushing their wheelbarrow with Graham, Jordan and Luke trying to work together to push the heavy wooden box towards the orange-striped coconuts. As she ran alongside the wheelbarrow, Chelsea tripped, twisting her ankle. Well there was nothing else to do, so Chelsea clambered up into the wheelbarrow, much to Luke’s shagrin. First you come to my tribe, now I got to push you? he muttered under his breath, so only Jordan could hear. Jordan just rolled his eyes and kept on pushing.

Rebecca and Claudia proved to be coconut masters as they worked together to scoop so many coconuts so fast that they were able to help Fuego catch almost all the way up to Hielo which only had one more pile of coconuts to gather before they could move to the targets. Just as they made the turn towards their final pile, one of the Hielo’s wheels shot off towards the jungle, with Elliott running frantically after it. This was just what Fuego needed as they reached their final pile first, made quick work of it and started to deconstruct their wheelbarrow in sight of the 5 masks.

By the time Hielo got the wheel attached again, got their coconuts, and started dismantling their wheelbarrow, Fuego had already started trying to figure out how these pieces would also make a slingshot. Once again, Graham and Jordan worked well together (family!) and soon they had what looked like a slingshot. Hielo meanwhile, had almost caught all the way up as the women had kept track of all the steps when putting the wheelbarrow together, and they just counted backwards. In no time, both tribes were ready to start shooting at the masks.

Graham started shooting for Fuego, while Tyler was chosen by Hielo. With a lot of tension in the elastic, this would take a learning curve, and sure enough both first shots went way long. This would come down to aim, not power. Graham and Tyler each hit a target on their 4th shots, but that’s the point where the outcome of the challenge was decided. Graham continued to hit target after target, while Tyler couldn’t manage to hit another one. So what was a neck and neck contest the whole way through ended with a bang for Fuego and a thud for Hielo, as Graham hit the 5th mask, meaning FUEGO WINS IMMUNITY and safety from tomorrow’s Tribal Council. Hielo, see you soon.
