Reward Challenge #1

Happy Mother’s Day! We are celebrating this special occasion with one of our very own: your first opportunity to win a reward for your tribe! The winning tribe will receive an advantage in tomorrow’s Immunity Challenge. Given how close the first two battles  between Kobara and Nevala were, we have a feeling that this advantage could make the difference between a couple days off, or voting out your second tribe-mate on Wednesday.

The following are your SPECIFIC instructions for how to respond to this challenge, and therefore win Reward:

Below are 3 incomplete words that contain the letters R, O, S, & E. Use the simple clues to solve for the full words, then choose 3 players to send 1 of the words each to your host via individual WhatsApp message. The winner will be the first tribe to send all 3 correct answers from 3 different players. The order they are submitted doesn’t matter, but I should only receive 3 words in total from your tribe, and they should all be from different players – you choose which ones. How much more clearly can I describe it? 😉

Solve for the 3 incomplete words below:

A fairground ride
_ _ R O _ S E _

Canada’s national summer sport
_ _ _ R O S _ E

Marine mammal
_ _ R _ O _ S E

The winning tribe will be notified tonight via your official WhatsApp group! Good luck.

The Result:

After posting the very first Reward Challenge of the season, the tribes were definitely shocked by the surprise of a Sunday evening activity, yet they sprung into action. The purpose of this challenge was not only to test the speed at which each tribe could have 3 players respond to the question; it was mainly to see how well they could PAY ATTENTION TO THE INSTRUCTIONS. Though Kobara has the experience and would certainly react the quickest, would they remember to read and communicate the instructions carefully? How would Nevala cope with a sudden change in response method, amidst the pressure to keep up momentum against their rivals? The Reward was tantalizing enough, given that both tribes had been to Tribal Council, and certainly wanted to avoid it on Wednesday.

Well, unfortunately the result was that neither tribe won Reward. After Chelsea (as per usual) notified Kobara of the Reward Challenge immediately after it was posted, it seemed that the returnees would quickly dominate this one. Chelsea correctly answered CAROUSEL, followed by Bryan answering LACROSSE, and after a few moments, Amanda responded with PORPOISE (Cowin with the assist!) sealing the win for Kobara. But they were unfortunately not done. Because not every player went on the website and read the instructions carefully themselves, and likely also due to excitement in the moment, answers from Cowin and Kyle also rolled in. Because this was 5 responses and not 3, Kobara was eliminated – and it was all up to Nevala to figure it out.

Then, after April correctly answered PORPOISE, John sent in “1. carousel 2. lacrosse 3. porpoise” and thus, the opportunity for either tribe to win Reward was dismissed. However, this was an opportunity of another kind. Throughout this season of Old Meets New, the instructions for Reward and Immunity Challenges will evolve, increasing in complexity, and necessitating tribal communication. This was a test that both tribes failed, but at least these lapses in concentration didn’t occur during an Immunity Challenge, when there would have been a real penalty. Now both tribes need to regroup, learn what they can from this experience, and come back stronger for Monday’s Immunity Challenge.

  1. What a ride this little challenge was! I felt my heart rate rapidly increase during the reading and responding time.
    Also… I need a life.
